Living Learning Communities
Welcome to St. Edward's, incoming freshmen! Apply now for a Living Learning Community--a great way to link your on campus life with your in-the-classroom experience and the world around you. A living learning is a "community within a community" and is a great way to get to know people faster. It's easy to sign up with our online housing application, opening February 1st!
Living Learning Communities (LLCs) have been shown nationally and St. Edward's University to assist students academically and socially. Each LLC student moves in a day earlier than the rest of freshmen to start making connections earlier, but that's just the start of LLC benefits. LLC students receive a T-shirt, extra support from faculty, and opportunities (field trips, workshops, etc.) open only to LLC students!
In LLCs, students choose their housing based on a common theme or interest, and throughout the year, they explore the topic and deepen their knowledge of the subject with other LLC members and LLC faculty. In LLCs, much of your learning will take place outside the classroom.
We are expanding our options, so many more students can take advantage of the LLC program!
NOTE: Science and mathematics majors in the Honors or Wicked Problems LLCs will have additional programming available: participation in a pre-college summer workshop along with the Science LLC members, access to science and math tutors on your floor, reserved seats in select introductory science and math courses with your fellow LLC members, special academic programming, and eligibility to participate in summer research projects at the end of the first year of study.
For the 2017-2018 academic year, incoming freshmen can choose from six LLCs, including:
- Global Engagement
- Honors (for students accepted into the University Honors program only)
- Natural Sciences
- Social Justice
- Wicked Problems
Each LLC lives together in the same residence hall. Students in the community take one or two courses together and participate in LLC-only activities, field trips, discussions, and special events.
As a member of a living learning community, you'll develop strong friendships with fellow LLC members. And, you'll have the opportunity to really get to know your professor(s), and other university partners. Without a doubt, you'll leave your LLC with a strong network, ready to make your mark at St. Edward's.
How To Apply
When you complete your housing sign-up, you'll have the opportunity to apply for a Living Learning Community. Space is limited, so apply for housing as soon as possible.
If you're a STEM major and you want to explore the option of arriving to campus early to get started on your academic success and meeting other students, check out this link about FARM week, open only to STEM majors: http://kopec.create.stedwards.edu/farm_workshop/index.php
The Living Learning Community application is embedded in the online housing application, which opens for freshmen on February 1st. LLCs are very popular and fill quickly. The priority deadline for LLC applications is April 17--but some communities may fill earlier.
