Thieves Take Advantage of Unsecured Property

November 16, 2011

There have been several incidents of students leaving residence hall rooms unlocked and becoming victims of theft. These type of thefts could be eliminated by simply keeping your room locked at all times...even when you are at home. A sleeping person, or a resident in the shower, does not deter a thief who has been allowed to simply walk into your room and browse through your valuables.  Many of these thieves have been brought into your resident halls as a guest of a resident and then roam the halls looking for open doors. Thieves are also allowed into your residence halls by residents who simply allow them to walk in behind them at the front door instead of making them swipe in with their I.D. Bike thieves are also taking advantage of bikes with inadequate locks or no locks at all. Bikes are best secured with U-Locks such as Kryptonite locks or locks similar to this brand. Remember, St. Edward's University Police offer a free engraving service for all property. Engraving your property with your driver's license number deters thefts and helps in recovering of stolen items.
