IE Pre-Graduate School Internship
"UT's Intellectual Entrepreneurship Consortium (IE) is excited to partner with the St. Edward's McNair Scholars Program. The philosophy of IE and UT's collaboration with St. Edward's show promise as an approach to increasing the number of first generation and underrepresented persons who attend graduate school. The value of IE as a mechanism for increasing diversity inheres in its capacity to allow students to become entrepreneurs--to discover otherwise unobserved connections between academe and personal and professional commitments." - UT IE Director Richard A. Cherwitz, Ph.D.
Among the variety of resources that we offer to our McNair scholars at St. Edward’s University, one of its most innovative and unique is the IE Pre-Graduate School Internship. This mentorship program pairs McNair Scholars with seasoned UT doctoral students in their area of study to learn about unique aspects of graduate study. Interns and their mentors design the specific details and tasks of the internship experience. Activities, assignments and tasks are determined through negotiation between scholars and their doctoral student mentors, and an internship contract ensures that there is both structure to and accountability for the experience.
Some examples of activities might include attending graduate classes, seminars and departmental research colloquia, observation of graduate student teaching, discussions of an academic discipline, graduate study and career development with faculty and graduate students, attending meetings of graduate professional organizations, journal groups, lab sessions and other academic gatherings for graduate students and faculty and even undertaking a research project
This partnership emerged organically in part due to shared philosophies and vision of the McNair program and UT’s “Intellectual Entrepreneurship” (IE) directed by Dr. Rick Cherwitz to provide minority and first generation students opportunities to discover the value of graduate education and increase the number of underrepresented minorities attending graduate school.
