Alex Simons, a senior double majoring in Digital Media Management and Marketing and minoring in Photocommunications, shares her experience working as a communications intern at the Downtown Austin Alliance, a partnership of people and businesses working to strengthen the environment of downtown.
Alex found the position by visiting with Career Services and landed the internship rather quickly. She applied, interviewed and started the internship a week and a half after applying. "Pretty simple and painless, thanks to Career Services," Alex said.
This is her fourth internship since she’s been at St. Edward’s. In her role at the Downtown Austin Alliance, she is developing her writing skills, and assisting with the selection of an advertising/marketing firm that will redesign the DAA’s website and lead the way with their online strategy.
She also worked closely with the DAA’s committee of architects and designers for the future of the Frost Bank Tower Plaza. Alex created a presentation about how the bottom floor of the Frost Bank Tower can be transformed into an active community space since it's a prominent building of Austin’s skyline.
She is able to experience the dynamics of a real work environment. Ideally Simons wants to land a full-time position when she graduates at an advertising or marketing firm in the future.
“I want to work at a place that will let me exercise my mind creatively and also let me interact with people,” Simons said. “There’s a world of possibilities.”
