Welcome to the School of Humanities

The School of Humanities supports the Mission of St. Edward’s University by providing excellence in education through teaching, scholarly activity, and a productive learning environment to students in general education classes as well as Humanities majors. The School of Humanities prepares students to become independent and productive citizens by empowering them with the knowledge, ethical values, and critical thinking skills needed in a changing global environment.

We offer majors in Art, Catholic Studies, Communication, English Literature, English Writing and Rhetoric, French, Graphic Design, Liberal Studies, Philosophy, Photocommunications, Religious and Theological Studies, Spanish, and Theater Arts, as well as minors in German, Jewish Studies, Journalism, Multimedia, Music, Professional Ethics, Women's Studies and in each discipline above.

Faculty and students collaborate to enhance the quality of a well-rounded liberal arts education, including the following examples:

  • The English faculty support the award-winning journals Arete, a student forum for academic writing, and the Sorin Oak Review, featuring students’ creative composition; English faculty also coordinate the Visiting Writers Series and the Visiting Literary Scholars Series.
  • The Art, Graphic Design, and Photocommunications faculties produce the annual senior art shows and provide the community with other outstanding exhibits at the St. Edward's Fine Arts Gallery.
  • Our Religious Studies and Philosophy departments feature various guest speakers throughout the year to broaden horizons and open minds, all the while striving to impart lessons in morality and ethics to the student body.
  • The Modern Languages faculty provide in-depth education about many world cultures to help students better understand and succeed in the expanding global community.
  • The Music faculty’s direction of the University Chorale, Madrigal Chamber Choir, Mariachi Alas de Oro, jazz band, and the Omni Singers fills the campus and beyond with song.
  • The Communication department trains young minds to become fluent in the latest forms of modern communication.
  • The Theater department boasts the award-winning Mary Moody Northen Theater, which stages at least four student-performed productions a year and has a professional affiliation with the Actor’s Equity Association.

It has been said that wisdom is well-used knowledge. We believe that society cannot flourish without wisdom, and so we encourage young people to become not only knowledgeable, but wise.

The School of Humanities faculty and staff also provide support for the following University wide student and community opportunities:
