Self-Help Resources
Sometimes university life doesn’t seem like “the best years of your life.” There are many challenges--such as academic stress, relationship problems, financial pressures, and concerns about friends or family members. Before making an appointment at the Health & Counseling Center, students often look for ideas, information, and solutions through internet websites, self-screening questionnaires, brochures, and books.
Below is a list of resources from the internet that may be helpful in identifying solutions to a variety of concerns and problems.
Alcohol
“Facts on Tap” provides reliable information about alcohol, alcohol abuse, and educational resources for college students—including a good self-assessment to identify when someone has a drinking problem...as well as information about overcoming the negative effects of growing up in a home with an alcoholic parent.
Depression, Suicide, and Other Mental Health Topics
“ULifeLine.org” is a great website that has good information specifically for college students. The website has a variety of links to organizations that provide information specifically about a lot of common topics—stress, panic, depression, eating disorder, bipolar disorder, etc. The site has a very good “Self e-Valuator” that can help identify general wellbeing and when to seek help.
Hilltopper HealthQuest
Hilltopper HealthQuest is SEU’s own, custom designed online information and self-help resource. The website offers crucial information in an entertaining format on eight different topics that impact students. Nationally acclaimed as an outstanding campus resource, students can log into the website with their SEU email address.
How Well Do You Know Your Partner? -- An eye-opening relationship quiz
The Gottman Institute is one of the premier research and treatment centers for relationship problems. They offer a relationship quiz and other resources to help couples.
Internet
The Center for Internet Addiction offers hope, help, and resources for persons who spend so much time on the internet that they neglect school work, friends, sleep, and other important aspects of daily living.
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
The NIMH website is an excellent source for reliable, factual information about many mental health concerns. It lists diagnostic criteria for various mental health disorders, mental health statistics, as well as research updates, and information regarding mental health.
Psychological Tests and Quizzes
The PsycCentral website provides about 30 tests and quizzes for self-evaluation. Many of these tests can help determine if someone needs to seek professional help to deal with the concern.
Self Esteem
How about playing some games to improve your self esteem? McGill University has created an entertaining website that provides games to feel more positive and successful. Try it.
Stress Management
The UT Counseling Center has invited SEU students to use their online stress management program. This is one of the best online programs available anywhere—and it’s fun.
