Health & Counseling Center Mission Statement

We provide high quality integrated health, counseling, and wellness services to support our diverse student population in achieving their highest potential.

Health Services Mission Statement
We support the overall health of the campus community by providing a spectrum of services including primary prevention, public health, and medical care with respect for the diverse social, religious, and cultural identities of our students.
Health Services operates within a holistic health framework to provide easily accessible health care and health education to all students.  We are committed to working within the caring community of other university services and departments in promoting a healthy lifestyle that will support academic success and lead to an optimum level of wellness.

Health Services goals include:

  • To provide treatment for minor, acute illnesses and injuries
  • To provide routine immunizations and preventative vaccinations
  • To provide routine preventative and health assessment exams
  • To provide information about medications and medical conditions
  • To provide education that promotes healthy living and self-care
  • To provide referrals to specialty care providers as needed
Counseling Services Mission Statement
We facilitate the growth and development of students with respect for the spiritual, cultural and individual differences of those we serve.
Counseling Services collaborates with students, staff, and faculty to enhance the quality of campus life by providing counseling, consultation, mental health, and educational services. Our purpose is to help create a healthy and supportive environment for student success through services that address the developmental, clinical, and preventive needs of students.
Developmental: Provide counseling services that foster student growth through self-appraisal, critical thinking, and lifestyle and relationship choices.
Clinical: Provide clinical services that build on students’ strengths to overcome and manage a wide range of mental health and behavioral concerns.
Preventive: Provide educational resources and early interventions that positively impact students’ wellbeing as well as promote personal adjustment and growth.

Counseling Services goals include:

  • To provide brief counseling/psychotherapy through a model that focuses on strengths to formulate solutions to the challenges of college life
  • To offer early intervention programs for retention in circumstances that might lead to dropping out, academic failure, or suspension
  • To sponsor life skills educational activities that enhance performance and personal effectiveness
  • To provide referral for mental health services that exceed our scope of care, as needed or requested by students
  • To provide intervention in crisis and emergency circumstances throughout the academic year
  • To sponsor research/assessment related to evaluation of services and strategic planning
  • To provide consultative support to faculty, staff, administrators, and campus offices regarding student behavioral difficulties, needs of students, and the campus environment
  • To provide training and supervision of postdoctoral residents and advanced practicum students as well as leadership development of peer educators

We are committed to empowering students to make informed, positive lifestyle choices, take responsibility for self care, and achieve optimal levels of wellness in order to reach their full potential. 

Dimensions of Wellness within the scope of the Health & Counseling Center
Physical Wellness- Physical wellness is the ability to apply your knowledge, motivation, commitment, behavior, self-management, attitude and skills toward achieving your personal fitness and health goals.
Emotional Wellness- Emotional health is a dynamic state that influences and is impacted by our physical, intellectual, spiritual and social lives. Consciousness of self, self-acceptance, and self-confidence are essential components, as is the ability to share our feelings constructively with others. Recognizing our problems and finding solutions are also fundamental to maintaining our emotional health.
Social Wellness- The ability to form and keep loving relationships and supportive people in our lives is essential to striving for wellness. Social health consists not only of our personal relationships but also our relationship to our community. The contributions we make to society make our lives meaningful and leave a legacy of purpose and commitment for those who follow us.

Wellness Services goals include:

  • To provide educational resources and early interventions that positively impact students’ wellbeing as well as promote personal adjustment and growth
  • To provide faculty and staff with informative presentations on medical and mental health issues related to student needs/concerns
  • To strengthen, train, and support the Peer Health Educators in providing campus programs that foster “safe and healthy choices”
  • To increase campus awareness of suicide, its risk factors, and ability to respond to someone exhibiting suicide warning signs
  • To develop and expand  stress management programs for students that increases knowledge and skills manage mental health issues that interfere with achievement of academic goals
  • To implement and expand a range of programs that are directed toward women’s health and wellbeing
