Meet the Health & Counseling Center Staff

Health Services

Mary M Jones, MSN, FNP, Nurse Practitioner
Coordinator, Health Services

I became the Coordinator of Student Health Services in the summer of 2005. I have a Master of Science in Nursing, and am certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. My previous practice was primarily in women’s health. I enjoy working with the students at St. Edward’s as they discover what it means to be healthy and have a healthy lifestyle. I am married with a grown son and daughter, two cats and one bird.

Allison Smith, MSN, FNP, Nurse Practitioner
I have worked part time at SEU as a Nurse Practitioner since the summer of 1999. Prior to working at the Health and Counseling Center, I worked with the City of Austin and Seton outpatient Community centers for 15 years. These clinics focus on low income persons and families. St. Edward's has been a rewarding change. Working with such a youthful group has refreshed my outlook on health care, and my interest in disease prevention.  My academic history includes a BSN degree from University of Texas at Austin in 1980, an MSN from University of Texas at Arlington 1987, and training as a massage therapist.

Kim Yeager, RN
I joined the Health & Counseling Center in January 2012 after spending over 12 years in women's health. I graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A. in Anthropolgy. After trying out a variety of other professions (from legal secretary to cake decorator), I decided to pursue a career in nursing. I graduated from Alvernia College in Reading, Pennsylvania with an Associates Degree in Nursing. I am excited to be at St. Edwards University and be able to provide direct patient care to our diverse student population. In my free time, I enjoy working out, reading and spending time with my husband and two active children.

Ellyn Scholz, RN

I graduated from Texas Christian University in 2005 with a Bachelor's in Nursing. After graduation, I trained and worked in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Tx. I continued working in ICUs as a travel nurse until I decided to pursue a Master's degree. I am currently working towards a Master's in Nursing at the University of Texas-Austin, and will graduate in May 2012 as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I thoroughly enjoy working with students and hope to have a continued career in the collegiate setting.

Counseling Services

Claudia Carroll, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Director, Health & Counseling Center

I joined the staff of the Health & Counseling Center as director in June 2010. Before that I was the Associate Director for Training at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. I received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and my Master’s and doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

I have a wide variety of clinical interests including eating disorders, trauma treatment, substance use, crisis intervention, group therapy and multicultural counseling. In my spare time I love to run, sing, and play with my two exceptional dogs! I am excited to be a part of the St. Edward’s University community!

Jessica Herrera, Ph.D., Staff Psychologist
CAMP Psychologist

I am excited to be a member of the St. Edward's community and the Health & Counseling Center. I joined the Health & Counseling Center in August 2011. Prior to this, I worked as a Postdoctoral Psychological Intern for the Williamson County Juvenile Justice System.  I received both my B.A. in Psychology and my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.  As part of my clinical training, I completed an APA approved internship in Clinical Psychology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio.

I enjoy working with a wide range of individuals, including working with couples and groups.  As a bilingual therapist, I enjoy having the ability to provide counseling services in Spanish. I believe that it is important to be able to share your thoughts and emotions in your primary language, as they are translated and experienced differently.  My clinical interests include women's issues, multiculturalism, social justice, interpersonal relationships, and mindfulness. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, cooking, gardening, and spending time with my Chocolate Lab, Blake.

Charles E. Couchman, Ph.D., Staff Psychologist

I joined the staff at the Health & Counseling Center in October, 2010. Before this, I worked in college counseling for over 10 years, first at the University of Rochester, then at the University of Southern California and Otis College of Art and Design. I received my bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University and my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Rochester.

I have special interests in men’s issues and group therapy, but I enjoy working with students no matter what brings them to counseling. Outside of work, I spend most of my time with family and friends.

Pete Erickson, M.A., Licensed Professional Counselor
Coordinator, Wellness & Outreach Services

I joined the Health & Counseling Center staff in September 2010. Prior to that I was the Senior Assistant Director of Student Life and the Assistant Director of Residence Life here at St. Edward's University. I received a BA in Psychology and Sociology from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. and obtained my MA in Counseling Psychology from Trinity.

My interests include mind-body-spirit-heart wellness, body-centered psychotherapy, and creative arts as modalities of healing. I love to sing, laugh, listen to music, write poetry, play with words, attempt improv, converse about the meaning of life, and upon regular occasion, be instead of do.

Lee N. Land, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Alcohol & Other Drug Program Director
Training Director
I originally moved to Austin in 2002 and have been working with students at St. Ed’s since 2008.  I received my MA degree in Mental Health Counseling at Boston College and my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.  I feel lucky to have an opportunity to help students develop healthier, more fulfilling relationships in their lives.

I enjoy working with a wide range of individuals, particularly those who might not typically feel comfortable accessing counseling services.  When I’m not on campus I enjoy reading, playing sports, cooking, trying out new restaurants, and spending time outdoors.

Seleena D. Smith, M.Ed., Staff Psychologist
I am both honored and excited to be a member of the St. Edward's community and the Health & Counseling Center staff.  I received my Bachelor's degree in Human Development and Master's degree in Educational Psychology from Howard University, and will receive my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oklahoma in May 2012.

I am passionate about serving others, and I cannot imagine living life where I am not helping people in some capacity.  I consider it a gift to be able to work with students as they deal with life and all of the many ups and downs that come along life's journey.  I recognize the courage and strength that it takes to come to counseling, and I do my best to make those experiences as comfortable and positive as possible for students.  My clinical interests include issues of diversity, women's issues, relational concerns, group therapy, and supervision of therapists-in-training.  Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, shopping, laughing, dancing, and listening to live music.  In addition, I love hanging out with and loving on my wonderful dog, Roscoe.
