Teacher Certification Majors

Teacher Education

Approved by the State Board for Educator Certification, the school offers undergraduate and postbaccalaureate teacher certification at four levels (EC-12, EC-6, 4-8, and 7-12) with certifications in Art, Bilingual Generalist, Chemistry, English Language Arts and Reading, ESL Generalist, Generalist, History, Life Science, Mathematics, Physical Education, Social Studies, Spanish, and Theater Arts with supplemental certification in Bilingual Education and English as a Second Language. 

Undergraduate degree-seeking students who complete the 21 hours of professional education courses designated below will be awarded a minor in teacher education in addition to their major. 

Elementary School Certification (EC - Grade 6): Students completing the following academic programs will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the specific area of concentration and will be recommended for Texas EC-Grade 6 teacher certification upon graduation and the successful completion of the appropriate licensure examinations. All students working toward EC-6 certification must meet the course requirements under 1) general education, 2) elementary combination of subjects, 3) professional education, and 4) their chosen area of academic specializations (major).

Middle School Certification (Grades 4-8): Students completing the following programs will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the specific area of concentration and will be recommended for Texas Grades 4-8 Teacher Certification upon graduation and the successful completion of the appropriate licensure exams. All students working toward 4-8 certification must meet the course requirements under 1) general education, 2) professional education, 3) an area of academic specialization (major), and 4) a second teaching field (optional).

Secondary Certification (Grades 7-12): Students completing the following programs will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the specific area of concentration and will be recommended for Texas grades 7-12 teacher certification upon graduation and the successful completion of the appropriate licensure examinations. All students working toward 7-12 certification must meet the course requirements under 1) general education, 2) professional education, 3) an area of academic specialization (major), and 4) a second teaching field (optional).

All-Level Certification (EC-Grade 12): Students completing the following programs will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the specific area of concentration and will be recommended for Texas EC-12 Teacher Certification upon graduation and the successful completion of the appropriate licensure examinations. All students working toward EC–12 certification must meet the course requirements under 1) general education, 2) professional education, and 3) an area of academic specialization (major).

Supplemental Certificates: The School of Education offers coursework to prepare certified teachers for two supplemental certificates: English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education.
