Books & Coffee Reading Groups
Spring 2012
Again this year, the Center for Teaching Excellence is hosting “Books & Coffee” reading and discussion groups for faculty. Each month, the groups will meet to discuss a new chapter in the book. Like many book clubs, participants will take turns, month to month, leading and facilitating discussion. And yes, we’ll always have coffee.
Book:
How Learning Works: 7 Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching by Susan A. Ambrose, Michael W. Bridges, Michele DiPietro, Marsha C. Lovett, and Marie K. Norman (2010)
Groups:
To accommodate differing schedules, we have created two groups. One will meet on Thursdays from 12:30–1:45 pm, and another will meet on Fridays from 2-3:30 pm. If you wish to participate, you should be able to attend most of the meetings on a given group’s schedule, since this format is designed to foster relationships among group members, not just great discussion. Perfect attendance, however, is not required.
Book Copies:
The CTE has a limited number of free copies of the book. We will give these out on a first come, first served basis to those who can commit to attend at least 3 of the spring meetings of your group. To receive a free copy of the book, please contact the CTE director, Julie Sievers (see the contact information on the left-hand side of this web page). If cannot commit to 3 meetings, or you sign up after we have run out of copies, you may still join a group. You can purchase your own copy from the publisher, Wiley, or from Amazon.
