In recent years, the number of books designed to orient new faculty to the university has exploded. Many of these titles are also geared towards not-so-new faculty. They include advice about managing an academic career, developing as a teacher and researcher, building a network and finding mentors, and even managing time commitments.
How do you find some of these titles? A good place to start is a bibliography recently compiled on the blog of Dr. Angela Linse, Executive Director of Penn State's teaching center, The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence.
Linse divides her list into three categories:
- books for new faculty
- books for new faculty who are also new to teaching
- other books relevant to succeeding in an academic career
Most of these books can be ordered online easily. And the Center for Teaching Excellence owns many of them. Inquire at the CTE if you'd like to know whether we own one of these titles or would like to check one out.
