Standard Backup Process for Faculty and Staff Computers
Installed programs are not backed up. If programs were acquired through the university, they must be reinstalled. If programs were not acquired through the univeristy, the end user is responsible for their reinstallation. Any music, pictures, videos, files or folders stored outside folders mention below will not be backed up unless specified by user.
No data is automatically backed up. The user is responsible for data backup.
Acceptable repurposed equipment must meet these requirements:
- Computer or laptop must be no older than 3 years old
- Systems assigned to a single user should be under the manufacturer's warranty
The Backup Process is as follow:
- Backup user's data utilizing a portable hard drive
- Old computer is brought back to Technical Services office, labeled with the user's name and date of backup
- If the computer is to be repurposed, the hard drive will be removed, labeled with the user's name and date of backup
- A new hard drive or computer is installed with a fresh updated image
- If programs were acquired through the university that is not part of the standard image, they must be reinstalled
- The old computer or hard drive with the users data is stored between two weeks up to a month. In the event that the user is missing important data it can be retrieved within this time period.
For Windows the following is backed up:
Any files stored outside the files mentioned below will not be backed up unless specified.
- MS Outlook
- Eudora, if present will be migrated to Outlook or Zimbra on the new computer
- My Documents Folder including :
- My Pictures
- My Music
- My Videos
- Downloads
- Desktop Files
- Internet Explorer Favorites
- Firefox Bookmarks
- Other files and folders specified by the user
For Macintosh the following is backed up:
Any files stored outside the files mentioned below will not be backed up unless specified.
- The user’s home folder including:
- Desktop
- Documents
- Downloads
- Mac Mail
- Internet browser bookmarks
- Movies
- Music
- Pictures
- Eudora, if present will be migrated to Mac Mail on the new computer
- Applications
- Note: Some applications may not be compatible with the latest Mac operating system and may need an upgrade, by request, to continue using the software.
- Other files and folders specified by the user
If Windows specific programs are needed, an installation of VMWare to run Windows is required. Specific programs, compatible with the Mac operating system not available on the standard image will need to be noted for pre-installation and licensing before the transfer.
Using the Migration Assistant process is as follows:
- Mac OS Migration assistant is used via FireWire connection to transfer your computer image from Mac to Mac
For a Windows to Macintosh conversion, the following is backed up:
- MS Outlook
- Note that MS Outlook cannot be converted to mail recognized by the standard Mac e-mail program, Mac Mail. If Outlook is needed, a VMWare Fusion license is required to install Windows on the computer.
- My Documents folder
- Internet Explorer Favorites
- Note that IE Favorites cannot be imported to the Mac OS, but a file will be provided giving access to favorite URLs for manual addition by the user.
- Desktop files
- Firefox bookmarks
- Other files and folders specified by the user
For a Macintosh to Windows conversion, the following is backed up:
- Desktop
- Documents
- Firefox and Safari bookmarks
- Other files and folders specified by the user
