  1. Are students allowed to install software in the labs?

No, in order to maintain optimum performance, any installations will be done by a lab manager. If a student wants software installed, they may make a request to a manager.

  2. How do you reset a student's e-mail password? Can it be done over the phone?

Access the Password Reset webpage and enter the appropriate student information. It can be done over the phone, but the student must provide his/her social security number, home phone number and date of birth.

  3. What options are available to recover a lost or damaged file?

If a machine has frozen while a student is working on a file, files that were not saved to edshare or a jump drive prior to the computer lock up cannot be recovered.

  4. Where can a student save a file if they don't have a jump drive with them?

Students can and should save their work to edshare. On a PC a drive is mapped to edshare when the student logs in. On a Mac the student should map a drive to their edshare account before using the computer. To connect to edshare on a Mac, on the menu bar at the top of the screen select Go, then select Connect to Server, type in SMB://edshare.stedwards.edu, hit the plus sign on the right, then hit connect and login.

  5. What's the first thing a lab tech should try before notifying a manager of a problem?

Believe it or not, rebooting a machine can fix a majority of the problems we encounter. Before notifying a manager of a problem, try rebooting the machine and see if the problem persists. If it does, then go ahead and let one of us know.
