Professional Etiquette and Attire
Why is Proper Etiquette Important to a College Student?
Understanding the “rules” of etiquette helps a college student establish self-confidence needed for professional networking, making a strong impression in an internship, and conducting oneself appropriately throughout the job search process. Some of us fail to learn good manners while growing up, but it’s never too late to learn.
Even though business etiquette is based upon common sense, it is important to gain knowledge beyond the fundamentals. Proper etiquette dictates the appropriate way to communicate in the business world: shaking hands, making introductions, leaving messages, corresponding by e-mail and in written format, and engaging in business and social conversation. There is also much to be learned about appropriate dress, dining etiquette, cell phone use, and social (digital) media.
Good manners and proper etiquette are instruments that will serve students well in all aspects of life, not just during their workday. Business etiquette is a genderless art. Mastering this art will allow anyone to walk into a room with good posture, a confident air, at ease in conversation and will help you make a positive impression on colleagues, supervisors, peers, and the general public.
